Save Big on Your Remodeling Project with These Top 10 Tricks

The first step in a home remodeling project is figuring out what you would like to do.  Maybe you are thinking of adding a room, remodeling your kitchen, or renovating your entire home; transform your home in to whatever you want while adding value at the same time.   A home remodel can be an expensive process, cut down on costs by adhering to the following:
1.    Never underestimate the importance of planning ahead. You can better save up for your projects by knowing what you want in advance, and taking the time to plan ahead. Planning ahead alleviates the stress of unexpected surprises and prepares you to better be able to handle those situations.
2.    Get multiple bids for each project. With the economy in the condition it is in, contractors have very competitive prices. Take advantage of this by getting more than one bid and compare prices to save you a bundle.
3.    After you’ve gotten your bids, ask your potential contractors if they can beat their competitor’s prices. More often than not, contractors will lower their prices if it means possibly losing you as a client.
4.    Keep an open mind and expect that things may change. A better price might come along or you may realize that there is a cheaper way to do certain things through out your project, make sure to have an open mind to the idea of change.
5.    Take your time on your project. The more time you take the longer you have to see all of the different angles and options you have available to you. Allow for enough time to ensure that everything is installed correctly. Don’t rush or you may miss out on quality work.
6.    Make sure to shop around to get the best prices for your supplies. Check prices online and at several stores to make certain you are getting the best available price for whatever supplies you need.
7.    Do a background check to make sure your contractor is the right person for the job. Check references and verify your potential contractor so that you don’t end up with someone who isn’t qualified to do the project right. This will save you time and money, as someone who isn’t qualified could damage supplies and products and end up wasting your time.
8.    Utilize what you already have. It might be that you can simply reface your cabinets to turn them into the desired effect of what you want, or you may be able to refinish your countertops.
9.    Map out the end result. If you have a blueprint of what you want you will be able to see the final product and can make changes accordingly. A drawing of your project will help you see exactly what you want done.
10.    Consider the long term costs, and not just the short term gains. If you can save money by spending a little more upfront so you don’t have to continue repairing or replacing a product, it will save you money in the long run, not to mention time.
