Ceramic Tile Kitchen Decor
Question:
I was told that using large ceramic tile as a backsplash in a small kitchen - placed diagonally will make the kitchen appear larger. Is this true? Is 12" tile too large? Can I use floor tile for a backsplash - or is it too thick for plugins etc.?
Answer:
12x12 installed diagonally on a kitchen splash is something that is very commonly done.
This can be an effective design option in certain circumstances. However, if you have a small patterned floor (ie - lino with a 4x4 or 6x6 tile look) and/or have small knick-knack accessories, the 12x12 can look a little out of place. If this is the case for you, you could look at a brick style tile (3x6 or 4x8) and stack them vertically for the same effect. You can, as mentioned earlier, use a thicker bodied tile on the wall. The only thing you may have to do is adjust the receptacles outward to compensate for the thickness.
